Continuing on the theme of sharing my favorite recipes while we ride out the pandemic…I’ve tried several #japchae recipes over the years and my family favors @maangchi ‘s recipe. There is quite a bit of prepping and slicing but maybe improving knife skills could be goal right now. Everyone is different but keeping busy is keeping me sane and distracted from dwelling on the situation. Be well everyone! . . . . . . #japchaenoodles #homecooking #homemade #eathealthy #eattheworld #eattherainbow🌈 #stayhome #recipes #beef #egg #bellpeppers #carrots #spinach #noodles #sweetpotatonoodles

If ever there was a time to share favorite recipes!! I have been using this recipe (will link in comments) from my friend Marc at No Recipes for years. I #sousvide the #salmon instead of poaching but the key is that the #salsaverde would be good on almost anything. Here, I served it with #fiddleheadferns just coming into season but you choose. It’s versatile! If you had to eat one dish over and over again for the next 8 weeks, what would it be? If you have a recipe, please share! . . . . . . . #homemade #homecooking #fiddlehead #fish #eathealthy #eatrealfood #stayhome

I no longer order octopus at restaurants because a dish usually consists of two tenticles which is not even close to enough for our family. At somewhere between $16 and $24 for the dish, it’s just not economical for me to order two or three plates of it. At home, I usually make whole octopus, around 4 pounds, and we sometimes finish it. ~Octopus salad with roasted eggplant, olives, and tomatoes . . . . . . . . #homecooking #homemade #seafood #octopus #Eggplant #Tomato #olives #instayum #instafood #mediterraneanfood

I’ve mentioned this trend in upscale Korean before ….and I’m totally buying! Kochi does a great job with their 9 course skewer-centric tasting menu ($75 but there are supplements you can add) where the food feels beautiful and fancy, artfully served, with knowledgeable and well trained staff. YET, the space is small and kinda cramped in that typical NYC way so it doesn’t feel stuffy and formal. It’s also currently still BYOB (no corkage fees). My two favorites (but really enjoyed everything) were the first and third dishes. Upper left corner, Pine nuts and potato milk soup, corn fritter. Upper right corner, Seared shrimp, sunchoke soubise, mugwort glaze (doesn’t say on menu but I think there’s shrimp paste on top of the shrimp which is divine). Also, the second dish of raw yellowtail should get an honorable mention for being so beautiful! . . . . . #nyceats #koreanfood #skewers #yellowtail #shrimp #fish #branzino #chicken #hangersteak #rice #bibimbap #pork #icecream #icepop #tastingmenu #midtownwest

So I can’t NOT compare this place to the other #Taiwanese place around the corner. All you really need to know is that this one is a sad step down and you should just stick with Taiwanese Gourmet. For details, read on: An overarching theme here is that they have poor knife skills. So much is cut too large and inconsistently. For example, some of the pieces of pig intestines were large and chewy while others were tiny, in random shapes. (I don’t remember ever complaining about this of any restaurant. It’s not super top of mind until it’s a glaring problem that effects taste and texture.) The #ricecakes were gummy while the pork was again inconsistently sized. The salt and pepper #calamari was too chewy. The #beef #noodle #soup , #porkchop #rice , and #oysterpancake were just mediocre in flavor. The best dish was just plain sauteed water convolous. I had high hopes, mainly because there’s a big bowl of swan tsai (pickled mustard greens) on every table. The pros end there… . . . . . . . #chinesefood #taiwanesefood #cheapeats #elmhurst #nyceats

Mussels go so well with #andouille #sausage and #fennel , cooked in #beer . The flavor combination is divine. Sadly, I haven’t been happy with the quality of #mussels for at least a year now, both at restaurants and when I buy it to prepare at home. They are never plump! Am I having bad luck or is this a thing going on? . . . . . . . #homecooking #homemade #eatrealfood #eathealthy #andouillesausage #seafood #shellfish #instafood #instayum #questions

Sausage, egg, and cheese is such a winning combo, especially when Lon makes the #breakfastsauage from scratch! Every winter, I dream of tropical vacations. I’m not even really a beach girl but when I’m freezing, I could totally imagine myself with a Mojito, this dish, and the sound of crashing waves. The simple little dishes all over the streets of #taiwan sold in tiny shops or street stands… They are equivalent to $1 or $2 a bowl/plate. I love the nicer restaurants here but also the low end and everything in between! I’m leaving tomorrow and the sadness is setting in… . . . . . . . #taiwanesefood #cheapeats #lurofan #tofu #taipei #instayum #instafood #eatrealfood #eattheworld #travelforfood #pork #meifun

The #bao place I posted about earlier always has a long line. It’s location is definitely better being steps from the MRT…but this one is just around the corner on a side street and doesn’t ever have a long line (but does have a steady stream of customers). We investigated and found that it’s just as good and the buns are 1 NT less which is negligible. Lon likes the #pork #buns here more, while I like the pork buns at the other place more but all the other flavors are a toss up. The #chive ones have dried shrimp in the other one and this one has some ground pork but both are delish. Both have a ton of flavors like snow cabbage, #cabbage, #bamboo, #mushroom … . . . . . . . #chinesefood #breakfast #chinesebuns #taipei #taiwan #instayum #instafood #streetfood #travelforfood #eattheworld #eatrealfood #eathealthy
